Preppers: Ready for disaster

Dianne Feinstein would like to ban (one prepper custom-built his by combining an AK-47 and an AR-15). Vice President Joe Biden even gave a subtle nod to preppers in a recent pitch for gun control: “If you want to keep people away in an earthquake,” he said, shotguns are a better bet than assault weapons. Of course, not all preppers are as colorful and obsessed as the outliers that wind up on TV, just as not all assault-weapon owners are preppers. Still, gun-control advocates take no end of pleasure in the idea that their opposites are all delusional crackpots who look forward to the day when they can take out all four horsemen of the apocalypse with a single pull of the trigger.

Until that failure occurs, however, cell phones will be potent tools, if preppers use them effectively. The term emergency will refer to a situation affecting one prepper family. Disaster will refer to a situation that affects a whole geographical region. Before emergencies or disasters occur, preppers need to have important phone numbers programmed into their cell phones and into the cell phones of their family members. During emergencies and disasters is not a good time for emotional preppers to be using directory assistance to find emergency phone numbers. It also is possible that, during a disaster, directory assistance operators might be overwhelmed with phone calls. Gas leaks, for example, might occur in preppers houses.

Worst-case warriors: Preppers ready for hurricanes, Armageddon and everything in between

Keith Hanson, right, a tactical firearms instructor in Estero, talks to a father and his young sons at a preparedness and gun expo on Sunday, Jan. 20 in DeLand, Fla.

If ever something goes haywire, the group each family having been cherry-picked for a skill to contribute has a designated bug-out location where it will retreat. Hanson will provide security. They would operate as close to a constitutional republic as possible, he said. Food, water, shelter, ammunition and other emergency rations are all taken care of.
