United has previously announced plans to retrofit its 737-800s and 737-900s with the new winglet, which the company believes will translate to a 2-percent annual savings on fuel for the fleet. Once the retrofits are done, United says the combined savings on fuel across its fleet thanks to new winglet technology should add up to more than $200 million a year.
