Disaster Preparedness: Planning Ahead

A healthcare facility that’s located seaside, for example, will have more cause to prepare for flooding than an office somewhere on a hilltop. Determine which natural disasters are more likely to impede business but don’t neglect incidents that can happen anywhere or can be man-made such as a fire. The most disruptive and wide-spread disasters that affect business operations are power outages, followed by storms: Symantec’s 2012 Disaster Preparedness Topical Survey Although no one can predict when, where, or what kind of disaster will strike, a good first step in disaster preparedness is in knowing what types of disasters an area is more subject to experience. AT&T offers a handy guide that breaks down the most common natural disasters and in which U.S. states they occur . It’s also important to consider what the possible effects of likely disaster might be. Equipment can be destroyed.

FEMA Offers Disaster Preparedness Tips For Parents Of College Students

The Breadwinner by Stevie Kopas

The measurements were sent to communities downstream via mobile phone. If water levels start to rise, people have time to prepare for possible flooding. Catholic Relief Services (CRS), Save the Children and IFRC have also sent out blast messages to warn people of impending threats, such as high flood risk, imminent storms or disease outbreaks in Haiti, Kenya Madagascar, Niger, and other countries. Speeding up delivery According to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), a pilot programme of Action Aid and infoasaid in Kenya last year showed that sending advance text messages to aid recipients about pending deliveries cut down distribution time from three hours to 30 minutes. Similarly, IFRC says they were able to reach more people in a shorter amount of time in Nigeria when distributing mosquito nets just by sending out text messages beforehand. Geo-hazard mapping WFP has partnered with NGOs, UN agencies and governments around the world to map vegetation, crop coverage, market locations and water sources in areas that are prone to natural disasters, using technologies such as satellite imagery, spatial analysis and GIS.

Children can play an important role in disaster preparedness

Prepare an emergency information sheet listing the names, locations and phone numbers for family members, physicians, medical insurance, and other important resources. Check with your homeowners insurance company to see if your policy covers your students belongings at school. If not, you may need to purchase an additional rental policy to cover items in your students dorm room. Advise your student to keep their emergency kit under the bed or on the top shelf of a closet where it will be easily accessible in an emergency. Ready-made disaster kits designed for students can be ordered from the American Red Cross at http://www.redcrossstore.org . Information on compiling your own disaster readiness kit is available on the web at http://www.fema.gov .

How technology is transforming emergency preparedness

Some important steps that should be taken on priority basis are construction of safe schools to protect children in case of emergencies like fire or earthquake or reducing the risks of open sewers and live wires during rains. With a little effort, all such death traps may be eliminated and prevent totally undue losses. During the rehabilitation work, after heavy rains in 2011, in rural areas of the Sindh province; I had observed that many children took great interest in development work and even proposed new plans for their places such as schools, playgrounds, and streets. Children are absolutely entitled to participate in decisions that have any effect on their lives. Therefore, their concerns should be addressed especially in disaster prevention and rebuilding process. I, recently, had a chance to speak with a group of children and share ideas about their participation in important issues. The small group discussion was organized by the Karachi based Social Research and Development Organization (SRDO).
